• Should we be worried about Nigel?

As 2014 became 2015, the media was full of stories about how Nigel Farage MEP was to give up alcohol for January. This was part of a nationwide health campaign to reduce levels of drinking, and increase awareness of the need to refrain from habitual tippling.

The other day, I read on the front page of The Times, that ‘A glass of wine or a bottle of beer a day in middle age dramatically cuts the risk of heart failure’. This nugget of advice is given to us courtesy of research published by the European Heart Journal.

Terrifying news, or what? Nigel has given up just as the evidence is piling up that alcohol reduces heart attacks. I urge him to re-think his decision to abstain and get back to his old regime immediately.

Personally, I am glad that couple of pints of Courage Directors* that I enjoyed on Monday night at The Crown & Sceptre in St Marychurch (when I had a good evening chatting with the Bay branch of Friends of the Earth) was entirely justifiable on health grounds!

Meanwhile, below is the text of my two questions for answer at full council on Thursday, 5 February – as promised in this Bulletin on 8 January:

    1. What is the council’s current strategy for dealing with the issue of dog-fouling of pavements and public places throughout the Bay?

    2. For the year ending 2013/14, what was the total sum paid in fines following the issue of penalty notices for dog–fouling of pavements and public places throughout the Bay?

Both questions will be for answer by Cllr Robert Excell, Executive Lead for Safer Communities

    * Other real ales are available!
